MoDem PRO – Programme and opportunity

MoDem is the choreographic language that Roberto Zappalà has developed in his 32-year career with his company. Through practices that have acquired a specific terminology linked anatomically to flows, controls, articular and muscular exegeses, often inspired by the activity of the volcano Etna. A methodology that aims to bring the dancer closer to the language that characterizes Compagnia Zappalà Danza.

MoDem, an acronym for Democratic Movement, is also the focus of the two different programs MoDem Pro and MoDem Atelier.

MoDem PRO is an intense programme open to dancers who have technical expertise and to professional dancers wishing to familiarise with and/or contribute to MoDem’s creative style. The dancers will all go through the same selection process to check their suitability for Compagnia Zappalà Danza’s repertoire and language and ability to contribute within its creative framework. Dancers are expected to have a solid classical and contemporary training.

MoDem PRO programme provides a three months full immersion on the language MoDem of Compagnia Zappalà Danza. After this program, up to 4 dancers will be selected to join the CZD2 giovane compagnia zappalà danza which will work on new creations with guest choreographers and Compagnia Zappalà Danza repertoire. The selected dancers of CZD2 will receive a scholarship during the production period.

The MoDem Pro project allows dancers to analyse practises and bodily gestures typical of the MoDem language, to gradually work towards it and develop it and possibly bring it on stage. Classes of ballet, MoDem language and repertory workshops of Compagnia Zappalà Danza are held daily.

In the short but intense period, the selected dancers will also be involved in some creative activities (SEEDs). The SEEDs project is a first opportunity to meet with the audience and to present a series of choreographic pieces created by the same dancers. With the Seeds project the participants have the opportunity to test their creativity and artistic skills by reworking the concepts of the MoDem language and the repertory choreographic material learned during the 3 months program.
